PARK OF ATTRE CASTLE

PARK OF ATTRE CASTLE
© Collection Château d'Attre

A ravishing 18th century manor house, the Chateau d'Attre was built on the foundations of a mediaeval fortress. The Archduchess Marie-Christine of Austria and her husband Albert de Saxe Teschen, governors of the southern Netherlands, often stayed here. Combining French and Austrian styles, the chateau is set in a very fine 17 hectare estate bordering on the Dendre. Both landscaped garden and forest park, it contains melancholy features such as the ruined Belvedere tower, the 15th century dovecote, the hermitage, the Vignou tower, the Swiss chalet, the bath house etc., as well as various constructions in the taste of the period such as "le Rocher", a 24 metre high artificial grotto surmounted by a hunting platform built for the use of Marie-Christine and her husband.
