A city on the way up
Charleroi righteously earned its title of capital of Walloon comic strip capital, because it was in this city that the publishing company "Les Éditions Dupuis" launched the "Spirou" magazine (STATUE OF SPIROU AND FANTASIO) and its numerous comic strip heroes we still enjoy today: Gaston Lagaffe, Lucky Luke (STATUE OF LUCKY LUKE), the Smurfs, Boule et Bill (STATUE OF 'BOULE & BILL'), Buck Dany….
People may not realise it, but Charleroi also has an Art Nouveau heritage, a remarkable MUSEUM OF PHOTOGRAPHY (80,000 photos) that is among the largest in Europe, and a MUSEUM OF GLASS showing the age-old knowhow of the region and its blooming industrial past.
Nowadays, the slagheaps are still a visible proof that Charleroi was once a mining area. These exceptional hills were formed by coal extraction. As a result of the slagheaps' microclimate, the region has a very diverse landscape with many plant and animal species, making it a popular destination for walks (LA CHAINE DES TERRILS - CHAINE CAROLO).
